  • Mission

The RSL is the UK's national charity for the advancement of literature and works to act as a voice for the value of literature, to engage the public in literature and to honour and encourage writers.
  • Brief history

The RSL was founded in 1820 “to excite literary talent and reward literary merit”. Now, 200 years on, we still aim to meet these ideals, through a growing array of activities including events, awards, our magazine and website, and outreach to schools, and our Fellowship of distinguished writers.
